A new genetic lineage of Asparagopsis taxiformis (Rhodophyta) in the Mediterranean Sea: As the DNA barcoding indicates a recent Lessepsian introduction

    Get PDF
Asparagopsis taxiformis (Delile) Trevisan is a red marine macroalga (Bonnemaisoniales, Rhodophyta) with high invasive potential and broad worldwide distribution. In the Mediterranean Sea, A. taxiformis was reported before the opening of the Suez Canal and is comprised of two different cryptic lineages, named L2 and L3. As for the Israeli Mediterranean Sea (IMS), A. taxiformis benthic populations have seemingly expanded with several large seasonal blooms recorded in recent years. However, neither ecology nor molecular substantial studies have been conducted for this particular geographical area. Increasing sampling intensity and geographical coverage may reveal new lineages or indicate human-mediated spread routes not only for A. taxiformis but for macroalgae in general. This approach is particularly important in areas such as the eastern Mediterranean Sea, which experiences intense biological invasion on a global scale. In this study, randomly samples specimens (n = 30) of A. taxiformis and preserved herbarium samples (n = 4) collected from the IMS in the past, were all barcoded and taxonomically identified using three molecular genetic markers (LSU, cox2-3 spacer, and rbcL). We found a cryptic lineage 4 (L4) of A. taxiformis first reported here for the Mediterranean Sea, and previously described for the western Indo-Pacific and Hawaii. Herbarium samples confirmed the presence of L4 as early as 2013. Comparative assessment of cox2-3 spacer marker indicates 100% similarity to sequenced L4 samples from Egypt in the Red Sea. The IMS cox2-3 spacer sequences differed from previously sequenced samples from the Mediterranean Sea by 2.3% and 3.9% bp, compared to L3 and L2 Mediterranean populations, respectively. Morphological inspections indicate monoecious L4 gametophytes which are larger than the L4 population reported previously from Hawaii. Altogether, our results strongly indicate a Lessepsian migration route for A. taxiformis L4 with yet unknown consequences for the local marine ecosystems

[EN] Currently, studies have substantially documented the relationships between components of the organizational climate and intentions to leave an organization. However, there is scarce evidence of these relationships, when there are conflicts between work and family. This article aims to show the relationships of the organizational climate with turnover intention when the work-family conflict (WFC) is involved in the prediction equation in its mediating role. The method included the interview of 292 employees of five-star hotels for measuring the related attitudes between these three variables using linear regression analysis to test the hypotheses showing the model with the highest variance in the turnover intention. The results describe the models required by the mediation test with the limitations of observing a single type of organization, inhibiting the generalization of the results. In spite of this, the originality of the study lies in proving the existence of this mediating role. The relevance of the findings is that it is shown that intention to leave because of unfavorable labor climate at organization is partially but significantly influenced by the work-family conflict. The implementation of actions that promote, in their management policies, the possibility of supporting employees with the balance between their work and family relationships, can facilitate a work environment that reduces staff turnover. Passive design strategies and performance of Net Energy Plus Houses

    Get PDF
The first step in order to comply with the European Union goals of Near to Zero Energy Buildings is to reduce the energy consumption in buildings. Most of the building consumption is related to the use of active systems to maintain the interior comfort. Passive design strategies contribute to improve the interior comfort conditions, increasing the energy efficiency in buildings and reducing their energy consumption. In this work, an analysis of the passive strategies used in Net Energy Plus Houses has been made. The participating houses of the Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 competition were used as case studies. The passive design strategies of these houses were compared with the annual simulations, and the competition monitored data, especially during the Passive Monitored Period. The analysis included the thermal properties of the building envelope, geometric parameters, ratios and others passive solutions such as Thermal Energy Storage systems, evaporative cooling, night ventilation, solar gains and night sky radiation cooling. The results reflect the impact of passive design strategies on the houses' comfort and efficiency, as well as their influence in helping to achieve the Zero Energy Buildings category

Enhancing Bioproducts in Seaweeds via Sustainable Aquaculture: Antioxidant and Sun-Protection Compounds

    Get PDF
Marine macroalgae are considered an untapped source of healthy natural metabolites and their market demand is rapidly increasing. Intertidal macroalgae present chemical defense mechanisms that enable them to thrive under changing environmental conditions. These intracellular chemicals include compounds that can be used for human benefit. The aim of this study was to test cultivation protocols that direct seaweed metabolic responses to enhance the production of target antioxidant and photoprotective biomaterials. We present an original integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) design, based on a two-phase cultivation plan, in which three seaweed species were initially fed by fish effluents, and subsequently exposed to various abiotic stresses, namely, high irradiance, nutrient starvation, and high salinity. The combined effect of the IMTA’s high nutrient concentrations and/or followed by the abiotic stressors enhanced the seaweeds’ content of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) by 2.3-fold, phenolic compounds by 1.4-fold, and their antioxidant capacity by 1.8-fold. The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) rose by 2.7-fold, and the chlorophyll and phycobiliprotein synthesis was stimulated dramatically by an order of magnitude. Our integrated cultivation system design offers a sustainable approach, with the potential to be adopted by emerging industries for food and health applicationsPartial funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málag

There are currently few studies that support the efficacy of the Unified Protocol (UP) for the transdiagnostic treatment of emotional disorders in university samples. The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity of the PU in a group format, in online and face-to-face modalities, in university students. The sample consisted of 35 participants who requested assistance at the Psychological Attention Service (SAP) of the University of Cadiz. The following assessment instruments were administered: NEO-FFI; STAI; CORE-OM; SCL-90-R; PANAS and BEAQ; as well as an ad hoc questionnaire. The intervention consisted of the application of 12 sessions of the PU in groups of 8-10 participants, for 90 minutes. The results showed an improvement in the emotional management of the participants. Anxiety and depressive symptoms were reduced. The subjective well-being and functioning of the students improved. In addition, the PU was effective as a coping strategy for experiencing negative emotions, reducing experiential avoidance. In relation to the application format, both the online and face-to-face formats proved to be effective in improving the present symptomatology. Therefore, the PU seems to show its clinical usefulness in addressing emotional disorders in this population both online and face-to-face.
